Judy was the secretary to the president of what was then the other bank in Twin Falls. She was in a wheelchair and it was a while before I learned why as she was fairly young. It was because she had polio and the only noticeable effect was that she was paralyzed from the waist down. Later on I happened to become acquainted with the president and he was one of the few honest bankers or anything else I ever met so I guessed that he didn't have any knowledge of her extracurricular activities. Judy had some kids from a local church over on Tuesday night for some kind of activity. It wasn't something perverted like you would see these days but some kind of church thing. She also moved some serious quantities of drugs. One night something went wrong and the drugs arrived on the wrong day and the kids came over and saw all the stuff. It was mostly covered up - obviously some people knew about it - but that was the end of the church kids. Every day after work the president would push his secretary in her wheelchair to her car. The last car she had was a Buick Riveria of 1980s vintage, set up for a paraplegic to drive. Him pushing her seemed to be just one of those things, two people with a relationship of whatever sort that was. If may be that he didn't know anything about her activities before they were exposed and I'm inclined to believe that he didn't. Knowing him and our environment I think I know why it didn't change their relationship that much. You don't have to live in a small town to understand. I heard about the parties but never went to one. Guys and gals would come to her place and drink and do drugs and fornicate. Lots of fornication and Judy got her share. Get her out of her wheelchair and put her in the bed and the young guys came in and serviced her. She wasn't unattractive and not deformed, just couldn't move her legs. I didn't know if her legs were in any way deformed or undersized as sometimes happens and no one ever told me. Whether or not any of the people who told me actually did it with her I have no idea but guessed that they hadn't. I understand sexual desire - do I ever - and understand her behavior. I've even known women who needed it that way. All things considered I wasn't shocked and was thankful for my healthy body. As were a number of women of various ages.
Harold Farmer was the chairman of the board of directors of the other bank in Twin Falls. Technically there were three banks but the other institution was a savings and loan and that was a different animal in those days. The big fiasco in the 1980s was when the federal regulators tried to make them all one. Harold and his brother owned a big stake in Last Nasty and a piece of the S&L. One of his brother's kids was my age and couldn't make the grade and stay in the top section in school and they put him in a private school. Nice kid unlike his cousins, one of whom was a classmate through high school. She didn't like me because she studied fanatically to be an honor student while I didn't do anything including wanting to and we were still co-valedictorians. Her brother was a couple of years older and is the one who told me that his old man had polio and that was why one leg was shorter than the other. He and his brother put some of their kids in to work at Last Nasty and that was how I knew the brother. A pretty despicable fellow and if I had been around when his old man croaked I would have been tempted to ask if he fell to the side of the short leg just to be mean. Their fortunes declined for various reasons and in the end there wasn't a massive inheritance for the kids. The parents sold their big houses and retired to some nice retirement communities but there wasn't a windfall for the kids. They had connections and had learned how to survive in that world and most probably did all right.
Van didn't have polio. One night he was in a car coming back from a high school football game and they were in a wreck. A couple of the four were killed and he survived but was left a paraplegic. His family had some money and connections and he had a couple of businesses. And was a small-time drug kingpin. Like my friend Steve he had the connections to be relatively protected and never was busted. He was the supplier for the kids that got busted and the judge skinned a bunch or prominent citizens in the Twin Falls area to get their kids off. He died rather young, in his 60s. He seemed to live pretty well as long as he was alive considering he was in a wheelchair.
