"You've heard the one about boiling a frog." Gordon said.

"Yeah," Jessica replied. "Slowly. The way we've been taken over."

"There's another example that uses boiling water," Gordon said. "You've seen it when you fill a pan with water and turn on the heat. As the water heats you see bubbles form on the bottom. A few, and then more. Some break loose and rise to the top, then more and more and then it's boiling. It may seem sudden, even startling, if you haven't been paying attention."

"They weren't watching."

"Not closely enough. They saw the occasional bubble, perhaps even noticed them becoming more numerous but believed it could be easily contained. It never occurred to them to turn down the heat until it was too late."
