Chapter 85

"Is Tuesday good for the movers?"

Jessica's phone had rung as Alex was getting his coffee.

"I'm good if you are," he replied. "What time?"

"Ten."

"Sounds good. That gives us tomorrow with nothing to do."

Jessica ended the call and entred the reminder in her phone.

"You'll be done with the place in Paragould," Jessica said. "Once the moving is done and it's cleaned up it's just a matter of signing the papers when it's sold. That leaves your other two places. We haven't checked on either in a few days. That reminds me, I was going to check on some security cameras for the farm. Let me text Alysin and see what she has. You want to go to the new place?"

"Yeah, let's do that."

I got more stuff to deal with than I need. Be glad when this is over and we can settle down some.

"I need to get this area cleaned up," Alex said. "They don't mow inside the fence. Think I'll check out one of the mowers."

They had checked the gold cache locations and all were undisturbed. The four or so acres inside the fence were covered with tall grass and weeds. They went into the shop where the tractors were parked. Alex started one of the Kubotas and let it idle for a few minutes.

"Seems all right," he said. "Need to be sure I got fuel."

"You usually got a couple of cans at the gas station," Jessica said, "whenever you were going to use the tractors."

Several five-gallon containers, some red and some yellow, were lined up along a wall.

Yellow's diesel. Red ones gas for the small engine stuff.

He picked up each of the cans - a couple were full or almost so.

Diesel sittin' around for too long, not good. Might as well dump it.

"After the movers are done I may get to it," he said. "Let's have a look around."

There were dozens of small trees, maybe a hundred, around two large trees near the gate.

"You used to cut those and dig up the roots," Jessica said.

Yeah, dug up the knots stickin' up out of the ground. What I had those axes for.

"I'll have to cut the big ones first," he said. "The real small ones the mower will take care of. May have to hire somebody to do it. I don't imagine I'm up to it."

"You probably shouldn't try to do it," Jessica said. "We should be able to find someone to do it."

Her phone chimed.

"That was Alisyn," she said after she checked the message. "She texted me the number for their security company and said she'll give them a call and tell them you'll be calling."

"Cool."

Remember Alisyn. Sweet kid. She and Doug had a thing for a while.

"She stay with the company? They were selling it, weren't they?"

Seems like a hundred years ago. What'd those chemicals do to me?

"I believe there's a deal in the works but it isn't done yet. Alisyn plans to stay but you never know with new owners. It depends on whether the buyer already has people they want in those positions. Alisyn says HR people are like car salesmen - there's always another gig somewhere. Maybe not one you want but at least you're not unemployed."

"I'm sure she'll do all right," Alex said.

"She will," Jessica said. "HR people are like accountants or nurses or truck drivers - there's always a demand. Let me give Jerry a call."

"Jerry?"

"Jerry Hess, HSI Security in Jonesboro. I see their vehicles around sometimes."

Alex waited while she called.

"Hang on," she said after a minute and then to Alex "Is ten Monday good?"

Alex nodded.

"OK, that was easy enough," she said after ending the call.

Her phone chimed again and she looked down at it.

"Harry," she said. "Let me see what's up."
