"We should probably update Jennifer," Jessica said. "She's not likely to be at risk but I'd like to let her know where things stand." "Good idea. Maybe have lunch or dinner?" "I'll call her and see when a good time is. You know she and Myles had a date, don't you? Or did I forget to tell you?" "Beats me. You might have and I forgot." "I probably forgot - she emailed me a few days ago to see how things were going and mentioned it. He called her the day after they met at Scott and Michelle's and they've gone out a couple of times. I'll call her and see if we can set something up." While Jessica called Jennifer Alex logged into the webserver and looked at the logs. He ran them through a filter to see where they important hits were coming from. That's a new one from Texas. And so is that one. Crawling all over and downloading the content - not real subtle using curl with the default user agent. I wouldn't do it and I'm brain-damaged. Some new ones from Jonesboro too. Some of that could be the lawyer or someone Harry is talking to. Lot of it though. Little Rock? Hmmm... "Jennifer says pretty much any day is good. And she asked if we want to double with Myles." That was fast. They did seem to like each other right away. "I'm good for whenever." "I told her Thursday," Jessica said. She put her phone down and came over, leaned over and kissed him. "What are you looking at?" "Haven't looked at the logs in a couple of days. Some new stuff from Texas and Jonesboro and Little Rock." "Little Rock?" "Yeah. Could be the lawyer or somebody Harry knows. I don't believe he sent the stuff to the attorney general yet, maybe somebody else he nows." "Probably so. What's wrong?" "Somebody downloaded all the contents of the site," Alex replied. "Who would do that?" "Someone who wants to preserve a copy, or to take their time analyzing it." "Where were they?" "Texas." "There's no one in Texas that would be friendly to us," said Jessica. "Wait, the doctor you were talking to. And Harry knows someone there." "Yeah, I'll check that. See if either one did it. If not it could be someone doesn't like what we're doing." "Texas seems to be the head of the snake," Jessica said. "This may be about to get interesting." "Yep. Today's Tuesday - where's our date." "I told her the 501, our treat." "Sounds good. Pretty sure Jen won't be upset and drink too much this time." Serious look. "I'm sure she won't," Jessica said. "She was pretty upset, and she seems as happy as one can be under the circumstances. Being in a relationship may be good for her." "Yeah, hope so. She's a sweet kid." "She is. Want to do something tomorrow?" "Any ideas?" "We probably need to get the house in Paragould sold. Have you asked Laura about it?" "No, this would be a good time. It looks like we may be doing some waiting for things to happen. There's still some of your stuff there. We could get it emptied and cleaned up and put it on the market." "Sounds good to me. Money's about the last thing I'm worried about these days - how about we hire somebody to move whatever's there and clean it up and get it sold?" "It's early - you want to run up there and have a look around? Make sure you didn't leave anything important there?" "Might do that."
"I don't see anything I'm likely to need," Alex said. "If I haven't needed it in over a year I probably don't need it at all." "We can have a moving service pack it up and move it," said Jessica. "Maybe to your new place. Just put it in the house." "Yeah, good idea." "Laura can probably recommend a reputable company," Jessica said. "And someone to clean it up for sale." Good thing I don't have to worry about money. Just tell people to do stuff and they do it. Because you're paying them. Why'm I thinking dark thoughts? "Yeah, that should do it." Because everybody is for sale for the right price? "I'll call her and arrange it. We should probably be here when they to it. Once that's done all you have to do is sign the papers when it sells." I'm not for sale. Jessica's not for sale. Neither is Harry. It's not hopeless as long as there's a few of us.
They met Alex and Jennifer at the 501 a little ahead of the evening dinner crowd. Jessica had asked Harry to reserve them a private room. Jessica and Jennifer greeted each other with a hug and while Alex and Myles did the standard quick handshake. Jennifer looks better than ever. Guess having a relationship helps with that. She as good-looking as Jessica and seems real sweet - he might ought to hang on to her. They ordered drinks and nachos and talked while waiting for the waiter to take their orders. "I wanted to update you," Jessica said. "With any luck things may begin to happen soon. Or they may not - the way people are these days. I don't want you to be disappointed if there aren't any good results right away." "That's encouraging," Jennifer said when she finished. "It's better than what would have happened if you hadn't gotten involved. Which is nothing." You got that right. "You're not likely to be in any danger," Jessica said. "We might be but you're not connected in any way other than being another victim and there are a lot of those. We'll keep you updated, especially if anything does seem unusual." "Whatever you have to do," Jennifer said, "to bring these people to justice... I wish there was more I could do." "You may be able to," Jessica replied. "When it comes to a trial. But for now it's a lot of waiting." "The mills turn slowly," Myles said, putting his hand on Jennifer's. They sure do. Myles seems like a literate type. Hope they chop it up real fine on this one. Now where do I remember that from? |
