Chapter 73

"OK, That nails down the hospital network," Alex said.

"What does it look like?" asked Jessica. "Not that I'd understand much of it."

"Got an IP block owned by Ritter. That's a local company, Jonesboro, cable TV and Internet. I seem to remember us doing some business with them, seems like one of our smaller fiber pipes. I'd have to check with Doug, see what he remembers. It's a small one, just 30 nodes. Let me see what they got."

Don't wanna alert them, passive probes only. I can see which ports are open on them and that's about it. Dunno how deep to go, especially from an address might be traced to me. Call Doug.

"OK, let's see," he said after a while. "Do we have Doug's number somewhere, or email?"

"I put his email in your directory."

Alex found the address, composed a message and sent it.

"I gave him both our numbers and addresses. I'd like to get his thoughts on this. We need to get with Harry and see if he has any connections, someone with the tech knowledge to do some snooping."

"Let me give him a call," Jessica said. "Hang on..."

"Mary Ann, Jessica. Is Harry around?"

They talked for a few minutes.

"He'll call you in a few minutes," Jessica said after ending the call.

Alex looked through the contacts as they waited.

"Our doctor in Florida," he said.

"What? Oh, yeah. What's he got to say?"

"Checking in," Alex replied. "I asked him to keep in touch. He has something for us."

"Does he say what it is?"

"He says it's a big package of data, he'll put it where only he and I can get it. On a private server outside the country. Says he'll contact me with the keys and leave it there long enough for me to download it and then remove it. He's being real careful."

"When?"

"After I contact him he'll upload it, and wait until I have it. It may take a bit of time..."

Alex's phone rang.

"Harry. You available for a chat today?"

"Let's go," he said after hanging up. "When we get back I'll contact our doctor. But now we need to get something going on our cyber-snooping."

Harry was working in his office, file folders and loose pages on his desk, working on one of the computers while looking occasionally at one of the papers.

"How's it going?" Alex asked.

"Busy. I've got a handful of possible leads locally, and my guy in Texas is sending in some. He's working on the CHC angle, seeing who all is involved in that, getting background, see what kind of dirt there is on the major players. It's possible, in an organization that big, there's people you can turn. Or like Liz, don't like what's going on and want someone to talk to."

"Speaking of Texas," Alex said, "my doctor down there has something for me. Big data dump apparently, I'm going to see what's in it. Meanwhile, do you have any cyber-snooper connections?"

"Anything in particular?"

"I need to get inside ACCH's network. See where the data is, download it without them knowing."

"Seems not to very difficult to get into anything," Harry said, "for the right man. I don't know right off of anyone that could do the... illegal stuff I guess."

"It's illegal all right. But the only way to get it."

"I'll do some checking.

"Sounds good. One of my former colleagues may be able to help."

"How are things going inside," asked Jessica. "How does Liz see things?"

"Sloppy as hell. It's so bad she doesn't want to be in there, but they need to be shut down. Fortunately they're so sloppy she could probably get away with anything, as far as collecting evidence goes. I told her to be careful though, I don't want her taking even small risks."

"How's Kaylee doing?"

"As well as can be expected. She and Liz spend a good bit of time together outside of work, putting together what they see. It's actually a pretty good setup, Kaylee is working with the patients, Liz sees what's going through the pharmacy."

"Emotionally, is she OK?" asked Jessica.

"Seems to be. Having Liz there helps."

"Glad to hear that. It may be harder on her."

"Sure it is," Harry said. "She's young, you're idealistic at that age. If you're normal."

She'll get over it fast.

"As soon as we hear from Doug, we'll get back." said Jessica. "Maybe have him get together with your cyber-guy."

"Doug?"

"Guy I used to work with. Seem to remember he was pretty sharp.

"Sounds good. Keep me posted."
