"I need to talk to Liz," Alex said. "I just remembered something." "What's that?" asked Jessica. They were having their after breakfast coffee on the back deck. Alex flicked the ash from his cigar and watched as one red squirrel chased another among the trees. "I told her to send an email from the hospital. That probably won't help much. If she's using Gmail or something similar, it won't give me the IP address of her local network. I'll make a page on the website and have her hit it from her work computer. That should work." "I'll call her," Jessica said. "It seems your memory is improving. Does it seem the ayahuasca is helping?" "Could be. I get more things coming back. Sometimes in fragments at first, but they seem to fill out with time. I've just been using it for, what.. couple of weeks." "About that." "I think I know how to do it," Alex said. "Let me set something up on the website and we can give Liz a call." "Sounds good," Jessica said. "Want to see about doing something this weekend with Scott and Michelle? Take Jennifer along." "That'd be good. Let me fix something before you call Liz." He tossed the remains of the cigar into the damp grass and turned to go inside. "I'm going to set up a page on the site," he said as he sat down at a computer. "It's not visible so you have to enter the URL in your browser." Jessica watched as he worked. "I was always amazed at your way with computers, tech things in general," she said. "That you can still do it even more so. They didn't manage to break your mind." "I wish I could type faster. I don't know if that'll ever come back." "It will. Your hands aren't as shaky as they were even a month ago." "I made a page that has what looks like an error message," Alex said. "In case anyone happens to be looking over her shoulder. Let me see, is Liz's email address in here?" He clicked the Gmail link. "It is on my account," Jessica replied. "Log out and log back in as me. She's in there as Elizabeth, just type 'liz' and it should find it." Alex composed the message and added the link after the instructions, sent the message. "She doesn't need to be using her personal email on the hospital computers," he said. "Have her use her phone, connected to their network. I'll see where that leads." "Let me give her a call," Jessica said. "and make sure she understands."
"How're you doing, Liz?" Jessica asked. "Are you where you can talk?" "Not just now," Elizabeth replied. "I can be in about ten minutes or so. Will that work?" "Sure, no problem. You should be getting an email from me. Call me when you're able." "Will do." Alex connected to the web server and looked at logs while they waited. "I'll set up a watchdog for that URL, track and IPs that hit it." he said. "Liz is the only one who knows it, but some bots and crawlers may stumble across it." Jessica's phone rang. "Hi Liz, let me give you to Alex." She handed the phone to him. "Hey, Liz. Get the email?" "I got it." "Are you in the hospital now?" "I'm in my car, in the parking lot." "Cool. Can you open that email, tap the link. You should see an error message." "OK, hang on." Alex watched the screen as he waited. "OK, I got it." Liz said. "Looks good," Alex said. "Here's what I need you to do. First, don't do any personal business on the hospital computers. Especially email. I don't think they're very sharp but no need to take risks, or make them suspicious. When you're back inside the building, open that email several times during the day, if you can do it unobserved. That will identify their network and I'll do some exploring. See if there are any leaks we can exploit. How's Kaylee doing?" "I can't say how that's likely to go. We've talked a little, she's uneasy about things but cautious. If I can gain her confidence I'll have to decide how to handle in terms of whether to involve her. If she decides to leave before it gets that far, I'm OK with it. I don't want her taking any risks. But if she decides on her own she wants to try to do something... we'll have to wait and see." "Sounds good. Maybe I'll be able to come up with something in the next few days. Here's Jessica." He handed the phone back. "Hey girl, thanks for helping. Take care of that kid." "Will do, catch you later." After disconnecting Jessica called Jennifer and they talked for a few minutes. "Jen says she's free all weekend. I'll call Michelle and see about a visit this weekend." "Sounds good. |
