"Scott Anderson." Jessica said. "No memory?" Dunno. Scott? Not from work apparently. "I haven't talked to him since you got out. I called him then and told him what happened, he said when you were feeling better he'd come by. Let me give him a call." She called and they talked for a few minutes. "He's free pretty much any time." she said. "I told him we'd meet him in town at seven. That gives us plenty of time. Do you have any work you need to to?" "Need to check emails I guess. See if there's anything important." "OK, I'll take a look at mine too. Then we can fix some lunch."
Must be him. About my age, bigger. Where do I know him from? "Hey man, how's it going?" Shake hands with the the guy that's Scott. "Pretty good for the shape I'm in. Hou you been?" Damn. Don't act like I know what I'm doing. He'll expect me to. "Scott, Alex doesn't remember much of anything about his past. Including people. We hope if he gets back into his previous social environment it may help him recover. "Some of us wouldn't mind losing some of our past." Scott grinned. "But seriously man, anything I can do." The three of them were in a booth in the Olive Garden restaurant, almost empty at this time of day. "Seeing people and places seems to help," Jessica said, "but we're just getting started. You guys hung out a lot, you can probably think of some things, like going shooting together, fishing. Is your band doing anything these days?" "No, it's just me now. You knew Davey died of course, and we had several singers and drummers that moved in and out, you know. So when Donnie moved off I didn't have a bass player either." "Alex, you used to play around with keyboards now and then." Jessica said. "You jammed with them occasionally. Do you remember any of that?" "No. I guess I still have them around somewhere?" "They're in storage. With your guns, library, everything." "Get them out," Scott said. "I'd like to go shooting again. And it's warm enough for fishing already." "You don't mind being around a brain-damaged guy with guns?" Alex asked, smiling. "I bet you can handle it. I'm out in the country now, got a big place near the middle of nowhere. Shoot out in the backyard." "We're looking for a place like that." Jessica said. "We've found one or two that might work. The sooner Alex is back in his old envirionment, the more it will help." "There are some places out where I live you might like. Let's get out there and take a look sometime." "Where do you live?" Alex asked. "Out on 228 a little south of Light." Scott said. "About five or six miles south of Light." "Light?" Jessica asked. "It's a few miles from Walnut Corner." Scott laughed. "Light is on 412 west of Paragould, most people don't know it exists unless they live nearby. And very few people live in that area. What I like about it." "We'd like a quiet place." Jessica said. "Want to go out there, maybe tomorrow, Alex?" "Sounds good to me." "Me too." Scott said. "Let me show you now to get there." "Actually I'll just text the location to you," he said, "and you can have the nav app drive you. What's your number?" Jessica gave it to him, and he tapped and swiped a few times. Her phone chimed. She opened the nav app and entered the address. "About twenty-eight miles from your farm, Alex. Add about twenty coming from Trumann. Think you'd like living there?" "If it's quiet and private. I suppose so. Let's take a look." "Paragould's not near as big as Jonesboro," Scott said, "but it's decent for most things. I go to Jonesboro maybe once a week. And actually not much more often to Paragould. Amazon sends you anything you want, often before you get around to going to town, if they have what you want." "I got used to not being able to get things during the plandemic." Jessica said. "So going to town became less important." After chatting over another refresh of the soup and salad they decided to call it an evening. They walked out to the parking lot together. "Nice car." Alex said. "Classic, what is that?" "'75 Trans-Am." Scott said. "I bought myself a few nice things when I retired, and this is one." "I'm not ready for any serious driving yet," Alex said, "but it looks like it'd be fun." "We'll get you back to normal before you know it," Scott said, "and you can take it for a spin." "We'll see you tomorrow then." Jessica said. "We'll leave early so we'll have plenty of time." |
