Chapter 32

"If you want to be close to town but have plenty of space, this is ideal."

Cheryl Fallis. Good name for a realtor I guess, dunno why. Pretty. Thirty-something?

A large house, relatively new. Under twenty years from the look. Large metal shop out back, a couple hundred feet away. Paved path, with a branch leading to a more traditional barn. Weathered wood, hayloft.

"A gentleman who worked for General Motors retired here and bought this place about fifteen or sixteen years ago." Cheryl said. "He bought this tract, it's about sixteen acres, and built everything. They also planted all the trees, so they're all young and healthy. He died almost a year ago, and his widow has moved back to Michigan."

"Sixteen acres?" Jessica said. "What do you think, Alex? Too big to take care of?"

"The corner markers are over there," Cheryl said, "and there," pointing. "It's square, so about eight hundred feet on each side."

The remainder of the property was like his farm, only smaller. A big grassy field.

Nice. Ready to move in.

"How far to town?" Jessica asked.

"The county road there runs straight to Highway 18." Cheryl said. "It's a good way to go into Jonesboro without having to deal with a lot of traffic, about ten to twelve miles."

"How about it?" Jessica asked.

"Let's take a look around, and inside."

The house was big. They'd only use a small part of it. It was away from everything.

I guess we're planning on living together. Permanently. Still have to get back to where we were.

The barn and shop were empty and clean. They'd never have to worry about storage space.

"I like the location." Alex said. "Anything else in the area?"

"There's one a little closer." Cheryl said. "It's about five or six miles away. About a mile off of 18".

Jessica looked at her phone, checked some messages.

"We've got some time. Let's have a look."

The other place was less promising. Nice house, but smaller, on a smaller lot. Nice for most perhaps, but Alex thought it was somewhat small.

"There's another one on the north side of 18." Cheryl said. "It's bigger than this place, smaller than the other."

"I'll give you a call in a day or two." Jessica said. "We need to get home. Thanks, Cheryl."

"What did you think about the houses?"

Jessica set a pizza on the table and turned to get the drinks. Alex took a generous sip of the strong, sweet tea.

I'm getting addicted to this stuff. Again? Maybe. Guess if memories come back old habits do too.

"I like the big place. Apparently money isn't a problem. Lets look at a couple more. But if you're going to be living there..."

"Is that what you want?"

"If you do."

"I don't ever want us to be separated again. I don't understand much... really any of this. But when I thought I'd lost you, I didn't know if I could go on living. Other than that I don't know what to think. I hope someday you can remember what it was like, and it can be that way again."

Eyes damp. I don't ever want her to hurt again. It'll come back, it's coming back now. Know it is.

"Being with you is exactly what I want. All I want. We'll figure out the rest."
