"I'm guessing you'll want to take legal action against the hospital." Harry said. "And as I said, you'll have to get one from pretty far away. But if you can get it into court, you can win. I don't doubt that at all." "We will," Jessica said, "whatever it takes, and money is no problem." "If you can get it in the courts, there are at least four or five others, just the ones that I've got here, that will be glad to help. Possibly a mass tort, once you find a lawyer to do it." "That would be better, if we can pull it off." "I'll contact the others, and let them know where we are. Meanwhile I'll keep digging on this outfit in Texas." "Something else?" Jessica asked as Harry appeared to be waiting, as if deciding whether to say something. "This is a small place." Harry said. "Sure, it's a big metro area, couple hundred thousand. But still, like a really big small town. Pretty much everyone knows everyone and everything else that has any effect on their lives. What you may not know is, this world is pretty rotten. Down deep. "You see them, on TV at some event, ribbon-cutting or something, business and society stuff. Slick pictures on the websites, nice clothes, smiles. But the corruption seeps through every crevice. It's hard to get away from. And as the man said, the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And believe me, being a cop you see some evil. "Whether it's small-time drug dealers and scammers, a drunk or drugged nobody beating up his wife of girlfriend, or the bankers and other business types, including the doctors and hospitals, and medicine is nothing but a business now." "I guess you've seen plenty." Alex said. "I probably did too, just don't remember it." "Probably, although they hide it well. But you got exposed to a really ugly part of it. There are some tracks I need to follow, but it may take a while to make the right connections. Find the ones willing to talk. Buy some drinks in seedy bars. "I'll keep you updated. This is beginning to look interesting."
"It looks good to drive on." Jessica said, looking at the grassy field. "It hasn't rained in days. Ready to try?" Alex had driven around it on their previous visit, but he knew he would need practice before venturing out on public roads. As before he drove through the gate into the open area beyond, and spent the next half hour or so exploring the area. A low area near thc center looked like something to avoid. The land fell off a few feet before rising agin at the south end. From either side a shallow channel extended to the side of the property. Probably has water standing in it after a good rain. Returning to the house they went inside. "Would you like to come out here for a weekend once in a while?" Jessica asked. "It might help with your memory? Or what do you think about living here?" "We should. There's more room to walk around. And it might help me get readjusted. Living here? I don't know. It's kind of small." "Yeah. It would need some work." "You talked about building a house here some day. Like this, only bigger. Finish the inside like a regular house, but with the metal outside. Low-maintenance, and it doesn't look like a house to the casual observer." "Part of your prepper worldview." She added. Oh. That. Still don't have a good picture of the... what? Big picture? "Not sure if I want to live here all the time. Let's look at some places over where you got the realtor looking. See what they turn up. And I'm not sure I'm ready to do a project like that just yet. I'd like to have my mind recovered a little more before starting anything big." "That makes sense. We didn't have time to stop and look at properties on the way over. I'll give them a call tomorrow and set up a viewing or two. You're definitely improving." Staying positive, I know. But she's right. Some things are starting to click." |
