Chapter 14

Doorbell. Great, Jessica not here. Hope whoever it is ain't in a hurry.

Delivery?

Woman there. Oh hell, it's Sam. My sister. The younger of the two.

Like seein' her in the door at the hospital. Who's that? First couple of times she was already in the room by the bed, before I remembered.

Open the door, step back. Lean on the cane.

They sat down in the recliners.

"How's everything?"

"Better. A little at a time. Still took me a minute to recognize you."

"I haven't been by much. Things are kind of busy, as usual. I knew Jessica was taking care of you. Probably better than we could. She going to be back soon?"

"Should be. She's taking good care of me."

"I knew she would be. You look better. How are things otherwise?"

"My memory? Good question. I seem to respond to triggers, I guess they are. We went out to the farm a couple of days ago. It made me think of something, but I'm not sure what. Guess we'll have to see how that goes."

"You do seem to respond to familiar things. I noticed that while you were at my place. It may take time. How are you physically?"

"Slowly getting better, I guess."

"Charlie's out in Virginia." Sam said. "Closing on the sale of their last property out there. She should be back by Friday. We'll need to go over some things, she wants to buy the Carver place from us."

"Carver place?"

"It's a small place out near Vanndale. One of Daddy's cousins owned it, when his kids sold it he bought it. Do you remember when we used to visit Uncle Sam there?"

"No. Or Uncle Sam. Or anything. Mama and Daddy, I dunno. When you took me to the cemetery, I thought I remembered them, somehow. But not much.

"Give it time. You were in there longer than you've been out."

Jessica coming in. Puts down some bags. Hugs Sam.

"How's everyone?"

"Doing well. I was just telling Alex, Charlie's out in Virginia taking care of some business, she'll be back tomorrow or Friday. If you can we'd like to get together this weekend."

"That sounds good. We're pretty flexible. Alex is up and around enough for us to get out and visit. People and places. Try to get his memories back."

"I glad he's improving. He's resilient, more than you know.

"I know quite a lot already." Jessica said. "It's going to be all right. Give me a call and let me know when you and Charlie want to get together."

"Will do. You kids be well."

"Doing all right?" Jessica asked after Sam left.

"Pretty good. How was town?"

"The usual. Even in the middle of the plandemic it was busy. Especially the traffic. Now it's getting back to normal, there aren't any slow days. Ready for some lunch?"

She put a pizza in the oven and they ate some chips and dip while waiting.

"I had an interesting conversation." Jessica said. "A girl I met at nursing school. She's been living in Jonesboro for several years."

"What did she have to say?"

"Quite a lot."

Jessica got up and went to check the pizza. She turned off the oven and left the door open.

"She was working at St. Bernards. She said it wasn't too bad, although there seemed to be some substandard employees that nothing ever seemed to be done about. A lot of emphasis on cost-cutting. But the doctors seemed to be pretty good. But then they required all employees to be vaxxed.

"She wasn't having any of that, and quit. She interviewed at NEA and ACCH, didn't get a call from NEA, and from what she saw at ACCH there was no way she would work there."

"What's she doing now?"

"She's working for a small clinic here. There are a number of doctors who refused to go along with the Covid hoax. Nurses too, a lot of nurses. He and a couple of other doctors opened up a clinic, and she's working there."

Jessica brought the pizza over to the table and cut it.

"Let's eat. I've got quite a lot to tell you."
