April 2023 - Part II

Fri 21 Apr 2023 10:02:13 PM CDT

Already used up first of two parts of the month, so part deux be a little short.  Kinda busy for the long days short nights anyhow.  Hilfreakinlarious movie btw.  Back when they made fun movies to be fun to watch and all that.

Attusabout '93, Painkiller dropped (as they say now, dunno if they said it then, probably not) in '90. Screaming for Vengeance was what got me hooked, even though I'd listened to them some for years.  Played Stained Class in the car all the time, so I could crank Beyond the Realms of Death up a time or three.  That was '78 believe it or don't, and still sounds as good as anything since.  Few nice live versions out there too, and of course Priest is always best live.  Glenn sure is one of the best ever.

Following Screaming with Defenders of the Faith, Turbo, and Ram it Down pretty good. Like Maiden, straightforward metal well done, some memorable songs, tracks well laid out. Liked the way The Sentinel on Defenders was structurally echoed in Nightcrawler on Painkiller.

After Painkiller Ripper came on and things were a bit slow, just a couple of albums, wasn't crazy about'em.  Like Ripper, but the old Priest better.  So was glad to see Rob return for Angel of Retribution, and if some folks didn't like Nostradamus that's OK, I do.  One of their best.  Here's the favorite studio albums:

I'll go ahead and list my favorite live ones.  All of them, or at least all the ones I have.  Numerous live sets may not have been released, and are quite good.

'98 Live Meltdown
Battle Cry
Live in London
Priest, Live and Rare
Priest Live!
A Touch of Evil: Live
Unleashed in the East

The 98 features Ripper in his first live recording, Live in London is the other one I know of.  I like Ripper, but preferred Priest with Rob.  Not a good fit I suppose.  Unleashed is the first one I ever heard, and had just discovered them.  Also the first time I heard The Green Manalishi and didn't know it was a cover of a Fleetwood Mac song.  Like them but wasn't a serious fan and so didn't know much about their early work.  I was inspired to look up some live performances by them, including some with Bob Welch, very good.  Live and Rare is a collection of of live tracks from the '70s and '80s.  Probably for fans only.  The '86 live set was very good, but comparing them (20 years) later it's kinda like a Skynyrd live album from the early years next to the stuff a couple or three decades later.  Technology and refinement of presentation, stuff like that.  Both good. Be nice if Blue Oyster Cult did a two hour set of their stuff up through maybe say Club Ninja, with plenty of the classic stuff.  Maybe do the laser show.  Reckon we're gettin' too old, them and me both.

Couple of DVDs, "Rising in the East" (first live show video after Rob's return) and "Epitaph" (2013) are probably best if you're new to Priest.  Epitaph was shot at the Hammersmith Apollo, where I saw a few shows back in the day.  Called the Odeon back then.  Especially remember seeing Styx there, about '79 or so, in their prime and before the Kilroy debacle.  Oh well...

Speaking of Styx.  According to Wickedpedia Serpent sold fewer than 100K copies worldwide.  Seems kinda hard to believe.  I own vinyl and CD copies (probably more than one vinyl as I bought a set of remastered vinyl of the early ones in the UK back in 1980 or so) and wore out at least a couple of 8-tracks.  Never did cassettes - copied the vinyl onto high-dollar tapes using a Pioneer CTF-1000 and later a CTF-1250.  Anyhow, 100K seems a little low, but you never know.

Using Maxell tapes and mostovus had Pioneer Supertuners with Jensen Triax speakers in our cars.  Awesome sound.  Nobody cares about quality anymore.  So forget a pair of high-dollar Technics turntables used on he vinyl, and selecting the best cartridge (test play a few times to see which one sounded best) for the recording.

For the billions who don't have it, here's the tracks (vinyl):

Side 1

1. Witch Wolf     3:57
2. The Grove of Eglantine     5:00
3. Young Man     4:45
4. As Bad as This     6:10
Side 2

1. Winner Take All     3:10
2. 22 Years     3:39
3. Jonas Psalter     4:41
4. The Serpent Is Rising     4:55
5. Krakatoa     1:36
6. Hallelujah Chorus     2:14

Okey-dokey.  Starting off, Witch Wolf a nice hard rocker, JY does the lead vocals.  Suggestion of werewolves and witches and stuff.  Continuing in a similar vein with The Grove of Eglantine, by Dennis (who sings lead) and back then I didn't know then (or for a long time actually) how naughty it was.  Not surprising, Dennis seemed a romantic type but could get sneaky.  Young Man is by James and someone else, and he sings lead.  Philosophical bit, one I quote sometimes in my pontificating.  Probably the uneveness of As Bad as This and the next couple (Winner Take All and 22 Years) attributed to the bad opinion of some.  Things pick up a bit with Jonas Psalter (I didn't bother to research at the time and figured maybe Jonas was a real person) and then the title track.  After that we get the kinda weird Krakatoa, kind of a spoken poem about the hapless island.  And the finale is quite good, the entire band doing Handel's Hallelujah Chorus with Dennis playing an organ, apparently in a cathedral in Chicago.  Which one, dunno.  Maybe in the liner notes, they had a lot of good stuff back then.  Not so with CDs (or 8-tracks and cassettes).  Nice finish though, we'd turn it up to 11 for that.

Okey-dokey, time for a smoke.  Did I mention I'm likin' the Good Times Geen Mini Sweets a lot these days?  Along with the 4K French Vanilla they a regular.  Wish they'd make a cherry flavor.  Maybe cherry/vanilla.  Or is that too kinky?  Anyway they all good with your favorite brandy, or whatever you like.

Might as well finish up. Kinda lost track of them after Kilroy. Will I ever get around to checking out the new stuff? Dunno, retirement busier than working. Here's their studio stuff.

Styx (1972) Debut. '70s and 8-tracks, foolin' around, usually ridin' around with the guys or hangin out in parking lots at night. Other stuff. Pretty good, "Quick Is the Beat of My Heart" is a real good heavy-duty track.

Styx II (1973) About the same. Lady did pretty well on radio.

The Serpent Is Rising (1973) Talked about this one earlier. First one I really liked a lot.

Man of Miracles (1974) This one better.

Equinox (1975) Nice. Midnight Ride and Born for Adventure on side 2 (vinyl) and the closer Suite Madame Blue all very good.

Crystal Ball (1976) Real nice.  Tommy had joined, and would prove to be more than just a replacement guitarist.  He wrote the title track, and one time they were playing in Memphis and went to the studio at Rock 103 and chatted with the crew.  Most bands did that in them days.  He played Crystal Ball on an acoustic guitar and added a verse that wasn't on the record.  Used to have a recording of that somewhere, probably long lost.

The Grand Illusion (1977) This was the big one.  Come Sail Away real big on radio them days, I's in the Air Force in the UK, all the GIs liked it.  Man in the Wilderness (Tommy) and Castle Walls (Dennis) real good.

Pieces of Eight (1978) This one OK. Wasn't super excited. Renegade got some good radio play.

Cornerstone (1979) About the same. Boat on the River by Tommy was nice.

Paradise Theatre (1981) Probably was getting interested in other stuff by now, dunno.  OK, Snowblind got some airplay and accusations of Satan and drugs from the usual suspects.

Kilroy Was Here (1983) This one kind of did it for me, and apparently for some of the band.  Apparently led to Dennis eventually departing.

Edge of the Century (1990) Don't remember much about it.  Apparently Tommy had left, according to the credits.

Brave New World (1999) Don't know if I even have this one. Looked it up and it looks like Tommy was back.

Cyclorama (2003) This one either. Looks like Dennis left. Okey-dokey.

Big Bang Theory (2005) Or this one.

The Mission (2017) Same here.

Crash of the Crown (2021) Looked interesting, but haven't checked it out yet.

And that's all for tonight.  Buenas noches muchachos.

Probably won't be checking in tomorrow.  Tornado blew the screen room off, expected it.  The price you pay for some things.  Anyhow, GF want's me somewhere safer, as if here ain't safe.  I about the only one with nothing but some trim damage and a few trees down.  Was tryin' to figure out what to do with one of'em anyway, problem gone.  She got plans though, may end up underground before it's all over.  Starting tomorrow.

Later.

Let me hear the battle cry

Calling on the wind

Let me see the banners fly

Before the storm begins

Let me feel the spirits soar

Destroy the enemy

Striking at the evil core

For all the world to see

This day will last forever

Deep in the hearts of men

Courage and victory Remember, remember

One Shot At Glory

In the crossfire overhead

Fate stands before me

Words have all been said

One Shot At Glory

Driving hard and seeing red

Destiny calls me

One night of fire

One Shot At Glory

Fighting on with dignity

In life and death we deal

The power and the majesty

Amidst the blood and steel

I still hear the battle cry

The call goes on and on

I still see the banners fly

The battle's always won

One Shot at Glory (Judas Priest ยท Painkiller)
